I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy and healthy New Year. These first two weeks back to school have gone well. We have been blessed with an increase in enrollment in our intermediate grades and as a result have been able to provide more support to those grades.
Students have begun their preparations for the “Festival of the Performing Arts”. Practices are happening in the library at lunch hours with Mrs. Neri and Miss De Vita. Several of the classes will take part as a group and our choir will also be entering with Mr. Maguire and Mrs. Berg. There will also be a number of individual and duet participants.
Senior Boys’ Basketball team took part in a tournament at Chatelech Secondary in Sechelt this past weekend. Mr. Thorsell and the boys played on Friday and Saturday and continue to practise on Mondays and Fridays after school.
Our Grade 4/5 class took part in the “Great Waters Challenge”. Week #1: they studied “understanding problems faced by many communities across Canada who do not have safe drinking water”. Week #2: they examined our local watershed and any challenges it may face with water. Week #3 involved developing questions for local government to learn about specific and historical concerns. To complete the project, they prepared a power point with local leaders and a presentation on Sliammon Lake, Haslam Lake, Powell River and Lois Lake Dam. In December they heard they had taken first place in school teams and won a trip to the Vancouver Aquarium in May.
Assumption is hosting 10 international students from Korea as part of Camber College “Winter Camp”. The students arrived on Jan 9th and have been taking part in classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. The students study English every morning at Camber and then join us at lunch three days per week. Students will return to Korea Feb 2nd.
On Thursday, January 26th, the grade 5/6 – 9 students will be having their skating party and on Thursday, Feb 2nd, the senior grades (7-9) will be hosting their “Winter Formal Dance” in the parish hall. Students will be allowed to invite one guest from the community.
Our annual Catholic Educators Conference falls on Feb 9th and 10th. The following Monday, Feb 13th, is “Family Day”- our families will have 5 days off – perhaps an opportunity to do something special together.
N.B. EARLY DISMISSAL at 2pm on WED. FEBRUARY 8th (not our regular first Tuesday of the month) to allow teachers to travel to Vancouver.
Sincerely, Mrs. M. Richardson
